Functional training is a wide variety of training that hits circuits, strength, TRX, kettlebells, many other types of training.  Functional training will engage all muscles that help you function throughout your daily living.  Functional training focuses on core strength, overall strength and flexibility.  It is appropriate for people of all ages from your youngest child to your grandmother or grandfather.
